Unwrapped (part 2)

Shedding layers is a delicate process and exposing the new can take time. New life only emerged after the strips of linen were unwrapped and fell to the ground.

Will shedding layers be difficult? Will it be uncomfortable? Yes, change usually is. What will it be like? How will things change? We won’t know until we decide to let go of the strips of linen that keep us bound.

Strips of linen left behind

“Jesus called in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, ‘Take off the grave clothes and let him go’” (John 11:43).

It appears there were a few essential elements that took place before Lazarus was able to leave the tomb and let go of the linens that wrapped his body.

First, was Jesus’ love for Lazarus. Love wants us free, not bound and lifeless. More than anything, Love wants us unburdened by the weight we carry.

Next, Jesus calls Lazarus out. Jesus does not enter the tomb where his friend was laid to rest. Instead, he invites Lazarus to answer and then take steps towards his freedom. We are always granted free will, a choice to respond. We can stay in hiding, wrapped in our layers of hurt, unforgiveness, betrayal, fear, sin, or whatever keeps us bound. Or, we can choose to begin the process of being unwrapped. It only requires a willing heart, and taking a step out of the tomb.

Lastly, Lazarus’ friends played an important part. Sometimes, we need companions who will come along side and help us identify these layers. Our companions remind us that we are not alone, we don’t have to live bound or helpless. They remind us that freedom awaits. 

Removing the unwanted layers requires vulnerability, the word no one likes. Exposed and fragile can seem to paralyze us. However, growth requires risk and vulnerability. Move forward any way. Jesus is right outside the tomb.

A love so great, a “yes” to an invitation and a few companions…and little by little the strips of linen begin to unwrap and fall to the ground.
